requirements

In addition to the general music requirements, please prepare and include the following in your audition video.

1. Required Scales for your instrument

2. Prepared Jazz Standard(s)

Required Scales

     All students will prepare a one octave concert

  • B♭ major scale

  • B♭ chromatic scale

     with the quarter note equaling 80bpm.​

 

Prepared Jazz Standard

  • For Saxophones, Trombones, and Trumpets:​

               All brass and woodwind players will prepare a single jazz standard of their choosing.  You will play

               the melody once and will improvise over a full chorus of the standard.  Again, be sure to introduce 

               the piece​ and composer with which you are auditioning.

  • For Pianists, Guitarists, Bassists, and Drummers:

               All rhythm section players will prepare a single jazz standard​ of their choosing.  You will play the

               melody once and will improvise over a full chorus of the standard.  If you are a drummer, you will only

               play-time the first chorus  and improvise over the second chorus.  Again, be sure to introduce the

               piece​ and composer with which you are auditioning.

  • In Addition, for Drummers:

               Drummers must be able to play a groove for at least three contrasting styles.  Each style should

               be performed for at least 8 measures.​  Below are some choices:

  • Fast Swing (180bpm)

  • Medium Swing (120bpm)

  • Bossa Nova (100bpm)

  • Shuffle (120bpm)

  • Ballad with brushes (80bpm)

  • Cha Cha (140bpm)

  • 6/8 Afro Cuban (170bpm)

  • Tumbao with Cascara (180bpm)
