The audition will consist of the performance of a prepared solo and evaluation of scales.  Evaluation will also be based upon potential ability, performance ability, and knowledge of fundamentals.

How To Prepare For The Audition

  • Practice the prepared piece chosen from the list provided below. 

  • Practice and memorize the required scales listed for your instrument.  

 

What To Bring To The Audition

  • A copy of the prepared piece for panelists

  • Instrument, extra reeds, mallets, sticks, and any other material needed (larger string instruments and percussion will be provided)

 

What To Expect During The Audition

Ten (10) minutes prior to the audition, you will enter an individual warm-up room

In the audition, you will play through your prepared piece and required scales.  Depending on time, you may be asked to play only a portion of your piece. 

 

The audition will include: 

  • Performance of prepared piece

  • Performance of required scales

  • Sight-reading

All musicians should be able to demonstrate

  • A basic knowledge of jazz literature and styling.

  • A fundamental understanding of jazz harmony and form.

  • Basic Sight Reading Skills.

  • Appropriate style for your musical selection (dynamics, phrasing, articulation, tempo.)

 

Students will be evaluated individually.  Areas of assessment will include:

  • Tone Quality

  • Intonation

  • Technique/Fundamentals

  • Interpretation

  • Scales

  • Sight Reading

  • Ability to receive feedback/constructive criticism

All instruments are responsible for preparing scales up to 4 sharps and 4 flats, Full range of instrument (lowest note, to highest note within range). Percussionists are responsible for learning these scales with mallet instruments.

Required Scales:

  • E Major

  • A Major 

  • D Major

  • G Major

  • C Major

  • F Major

  • Bb Major

  • Eb Major

  • Ab Major

For Drumset:

Three contrasting styles of grooves

  • Latin

  • Swing

  • Straight 8

Prepared Solo

Please prepare one piece from the list below.  Be prepared with both the melody and the ability for improvisation on provided repertoire. Backtrack or live band will be provided during the audition. Please do not solo for more than 2 choruses. Be sure to download the proper transposition for your instrument.
