High School Design & Production Online Audition Requirements

The Design & Production Department is looking for high school students who have an interest and passion for the "Behind-the Scenes" work that goes into all areas of production.  Fields of interest may include Costume Design and Construction, Props, Stage Management, Lighting Design, Sound Design and Engineering, Set Design & Construction or other applicable areas of expertise.

To apply to SDSCPA Design & Production:

Submit a digital design portfolio that includes examples of your work and an artist statement.  Portfolios can be created in Google Slides or as a PowerPoint presentation uploaded into a Google drive or DropBox folder.  Use the following criteria to help create your portfolio.

  1. Your Work:

  • Include images of at least three (3) pieces demonstrating your area(s) of interest and/or experience in design & production.  If you have no prior technical experience, piece can be submitted that have been developed specifically for the audition.

  • Pieces may include sketches, photos, or models of sets, costumes, props, lighting designs, sound charts, script work, or toher work demonstrating your area(s) of interest.

  • For each piece that you have chosen, add a brief paragraph that explains the following:

    • What production (show, class, or personal) was this piece created for?​

    • What was your process (that is, how did you do it?)

    • What did you enjoy about creating this piece?

    • Where applicable, include your research, including notes and any other evidence of process such as materials used.

   2. Artist Statement

In addition to your portfolio, submit an artist statement video.  Recordings can be done with a smart phone, or video camera and uploaded to your Google Drive with a link in your submitted portfolio, or uploaded to YouTube.  Include the following in your statement:

  • Your name (First and Last)

  • Your CURRENT grade level

  • Your AREA(s) of interest in Design & Production (It's ok to have more than one!)

  • Your EXPERIENCE in Design & Production (classes, productions, etc.)

  • Your REASONS for wanting to major in Design & Production.  Why do you want to study "Tech"?

  • What STRENGTHS do you bring to the Design & Production Program?

 

Areas of assessment will include:

  • Skills and Technical Knowledge

  • Capacity and Potential

  • Understanding and articulation of Process

  • Understanding and articulation of area(s) of interest

 

BEFORE YOU SUBMIT YOUR AUDITION APPLICATION

Please upload your Design & Production Portfolio pieces to a Google Drive or DropBox Folder.  Ensure the settings on your portfolio folder are set so that Anyone with the Link can view the contents.

If you choose to  submit a video statement, please upload your video to YouTube or Vimeo.

If you use YouTube, please upload the video as Unlisted to protect your student’s privacy. 

If you use Vimeo, please secure it with a password.  We will need access to this password to view your submission.
